Organic Hair Salons are a Thing

Updated: Jul 28, 2022

As a highly sensitive person who is easily bothered by many chemical products, this is one of my coolest findings yet.

I cannot stress how badly I wish I'd known about this before.

Lucky for you, you have me to fill you in.

While I was getting my bachelor's degree in Ottawa, I needed to find a good hair salon since I desperately needed a professional to fix the mess I had made by dyeing and cutting my own hair.

I looked up good but affordable salons in the area, and stumbled upon an organic hair salon completely by accident. I had no idea they even existed.

It was called Lucas Nault, so I didn't know it was an organic hair salon until I saw the website where they indicated so. Turns out there are tons or organic salons all around the world, and many of them don't have "organic salon" in the name.

I didn't know what to expect because I'd purchased all natural products that still irked me in the past, but I thought hey, might as well try it. And try it I did.

So what exactly is it and why is it better than regular salons?

All organic means is that all the chemical products used are organic. This includes the shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays, oils, heat protectants, and most importantly, the hair dyes. Ergo, organic does not equal boring. You can still get any combination of hair colours, cuts, and styles you desire. Blues, pinks, and all of the above included.

As someone who hated getting their hair done because all the products gave me headaches and irritated my skin, I was blown away at how comfortable the whole experience was. I didn't leave feeling bothered by any smells or with a borderline burning scalp.

*On a sidenote, if you also feel your scalp burning after dyeing your hair, make sure you're not washing your hair the day of or the day before. This is because the dryness from a fresh wash will make your scalp more susceptible to irritation. If you're super sensitive like me, it won't make the irritation stop completely, but it will certainly help.

Anyways, after doing some more digging, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many organic salons are very fairly priced. Depending where you go, some of them are even cheaper than certain "normal" salons, especially if they offer a student discount. So if you're a student, make sure you ask about that!

No matter where you live, if you're interested in trying it out like I did, just google "organic hair salons near me," or "organic hair salon (insert your city.)" Plenty of results will pop up.

Make sure you spread the word to my fellow HSPs!

Hope you have a wonderful week.

Take care,
