Let's have a look at why you should consume some cacao powder every week...
I was first introduced to cacao on a journey through the Peruvian Amazon, and it never occurred to me that the staple ingredient in chocolate could taste so good and be so good for you.
On top of being tasty, cacao is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, so it's great for skin, reducing inflammation, heart-health, brain function, and even weight-control.
When I came home I was eager to learn where I could get some cacao and how I could incorporate it into my Canadian life.
It turns out there are a handful of stores that sell cacao powder, which can be used in a myriad of recipes to add some flavour and fitness into your life.
I personally get my cacao powder at Costco, but if you don't have a membership or don't plan on going to the store, you can order the same one I use right to your door, on Amazon.
So how can you use it?
You can sprinkle it on top of some oatmeal, toast, or yoghurt, or mix it into some peanut butter energy balls too add some chocolatey flavour.
But my personal favourite way to use it is in a smoothie or in homemade avocado chocolate mousse. To make the smoothie, you simply need a banana, a tablespoon of cacao powder, and some almond milk. If you wish, you can also add some spinach, vanilla protein powder, collagen powder, and even some berries and dates.
Talk about a delicious healthy smoothie!
If you'd like to make some avocado chocolate mousse, the process isn't all that different.
Just grab an avocado, a banana or two, a tablespoon of cacao powder, and a tiny bit of almond milk. Leave the mixture in the fridge for about 20 minutes and bam, your healthy chocolate mousse is done! Add some strawberries on top for flavour and presentation.
